Getting going, when all you want to do is go.

What do you do on those days when you really need to get going on the work that is waiting for you on the to do list but all you really want to do is run away?

It’s hard to find the discipline especially for a creative job when you need to ‘feel it’ in order to proceed with the tasks. Despite some visual motivational cues, and some stern words with oneself, it’s not always easy to let go of the feelings of despair and lack of motivation to apply oneself to the tasks at hand. Particularly at year’s end when we’re all tired and ready for a holiday.

Write it out

Take a few moments to journal and express how you feel. This may not be something that is meant for sharing necessarily, but which will get some of the inner turmoil out of your head. This can be helpful in two ways; once written down the spectre is no longer trapped in your mind, growing every larger. Secondly, the simple act of doing something may make the required actions of the work that awaits seems less onerous.  Action is possible once the first step is taken.

Over time you may find you have a whole series of these little journal entries, helping to clear the air and the mind. Save them safely, or delete after reading – whichever feels right to you. For the moment, simply embrace the activity for the release that it gives.

Side note: the sound of busy typing also gives the impression of activity, giving you time to breathe and to pull yourself towards yourself, to in fact get going.

Give it a go. You’ve got this. The write thing with lead to the right thing and all will be well.

Have faith.
